Winter Storage....

The dreaded "W" word, but things you need to know and do to get your scoot ready for hibernation...unless you plan on riding it all winter long:

  • Fill your gas tank with fresh fuel (this will help prevent condensation from building up in the tank).
  • Add a fuel stabilizing product such as Stabil to your cold gas tank, using the manufacturer’s recommended measurement.
  • Ride your scooter for 10-15 minutes, to allow the gas mixture to circulate throughout the carburetor and prevent gumming. Again, top off the gas tank with fresh fuel!
  • We recommend your battery stay in a warm spot. If that means taking it out of the scooter and bringing it inside, then that would be the thing to do. Maybe you are lucky and no removal is needed due to your handy heated garage? In either case we recommend you attach a trickle charger monthly to the battery. This device will maintain the charge in your battery. It will NOT however, recharge a totally dead battery. And if you leave your battery in your bike in an unheated garage over winter, there is the possibility it could freeze and short out a cell or two and render it useless.
  • Change the oil. This can be best done after you've run the engine a bit. Kill two birds with one stone and run your engine after adding the stabilized fuel.
  • Make sure your tires are at the manufacturer’s recommended maximum pressure. This will help to prevent “flat spots” in your tires. We also recommend that you raise the tire(s) touching the ground off the floor on blocks, carpet scraps, cardboard...you get the idea. Just don't let your tires sit on a cold concrete pad all winter.
  • Give your scooter a good cleaning, removing any road grease, bug remains, etc.
  • Store your scoot inside (garage, shed, etc.) if possible and throw a cover on her. There are several brands of scooter covers available. Stop by the shop as we have a few available that should fit your needs. Or as an alternative just throw on a clean sheet!
  • Go out and give your scooter a pat and a “hello” every now and then, just to let 'er know she's still loved!
